Synchrotron Radiation:
properties and applications
Thank you very much for the participation !
We are pleased to announce the 1st Summer School within the framework of Greece’s participation in the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) hosted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Aiming to establish a tradition, this event will provide the necessary background on the production and properties of synchrotron radiation as well as on its applications for the study of matter (e.g. diffraction & scattering, spectroscopies, imaging, etc). Case studies will unravel the diverse and multidisciplinary character of synchrotron radiation. The Summer School is addressed to Greek and foreign post-graduate and PhD students, to post-doctoral researchers as well as fellows involved in industrial R&D.
The program consists of hour-long lectures and afternoon lab courses where the participants will have the opportunity to handle real experimental data and practice on data evaluation and visualization (infographics). All the tutors are experts in the field of Synchrotron Radiation.
Bring your laptop to work on real experimental data during the afternoon lab courses.
Upon successful completion of an online test, 2 ECTS will be granted by the Center of Re-education and Lifelong Learning of AUTh.

Thessaloniki is a historical ancient city (founded in 315 B.C.) that thrived at the crossroads of 4 important civilizations: the Ancient Greek, the Greek Orthodox, the Jewish and the Ottoman. Due to its 2300 yrs long history, it is decorated by a number of important monuments that attract visitors from all over the World. In addition to that, its proximity to beautiful beaches makes Thessaloniki a city of choice for visitors from abroad. Population wise, it is the second largest city of Greece with a population of the Thessaloniki metropolitan area that exceeds 1,000,000 of inhabitants. Among those, more that 10% are University students of the 3 public universities located in the City: the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia and the International Hellenic University. In addition to the Greek students, Thessaloniki hosts a large number of ERASMUS students that flock the city. This large student population makes the city very lively with cultural events running throughout the year. Traditionally wise, the people of Thessaloniki are very hospitable while its culinary tradition makes it a city of choice for those that seek delicious food at reasonable prices. To make a long story short, come to Thessaloniki to enjoy food, cultural events, visits to museums and archaeological sites and relax in nearby sandy, blue flagged beaches that can even be accessed by public transportation.
